The Hawthorn tree is Ireland’s native heart medicine. It is used in herbal medicine to improve circulation, lower blood pressure and help prevent heart disease. It is also used to support your emotional health.
Just as the thorns on the shrub, help to protect its delicate flowers and nutritious fruit, hawthorn has the ability to protect the emotional heart. It is considered an herbal ally for those who want a more courage to live from the heart, heal heartache and hold grief. It also has lots of fun folklore and mythology including being associated with altered states of consciousness or “being away with the faeries’. The Elder tree holds the energy of the bean feasa: wise woman. Elder symbolising rebirth and is deeply supportive in times of transition and clear decision making. Legend has it that magical powers from the Elder Mother are gifted by her to parts of the tree and it has long been recognised and prized as a medicinal tree to be both feared and respected.
Learn Hawthorn and Elders herblore, how to identify and forage, how to work with it’s essence and energy with teas, tinctures, flower remedies and recipes and (if the tree’s permit you) gather some flowers to take home with you to work with.
Then experience a beautiful Hawthorn and Elder Tree tea ceremony which includes a shamanic journey (meditation), and live music, to connect you to the the energy and spirit of the Hawthorn and your own heart’s deep knowing. We will finish our evening around the fire with seasonal snacks and kindred soul chats.
Found in folklore from the Egyptians, Greeks and Celtic isle, the elder tree was thought to protect from evil, as well containing the protective spirit of the Elder Mother which gained it the reputation of a witches tree. Elderberries (and flowers) are highly antioxidant and full of immune boosting vitamins making them a great remedy as we approach the very darkest, wettest, coldest period of the year to ward off colds, flus (and perhaps untoward spirits too!).
The Beaver moon or as it’s known in the Celtic tradition the ‘Mourning Moon’ due to being the last full moon before Winter Solstice is a time to let go of past troubles or grief and look forward to a new season and soon, a new year. In Celtic Tree astrology we shift into the ogham of the Eldertree on the 24th November, making this the perfect date to engage with Elder wisdom.
